In the Chinese medical system, herbs are used to treat various conditions. Herbal medicine prescriptions are highly individualized based on your specific symptoms and underlying constitution. An “herb” is considered a plant, root, stem, flower, leaf, seed, nut, mineral, shell, or animal part (such as deer antler) that can be used to achieve a therapeutic effect. Every herb is provided for us by Mother Nature. They are a reaffirmation of the healing power of nature. Herbs are always prescribed as an herbal formula, meaning that 2 or more herbs are combined to achieve the desired effect for the individual.
Why herbs?
Herbal formulas are an important component of holistic medicine, so you can expect that your treatment plan will include an herbal formula that is right for you. Herbal medicine is always customized to match each individual’s condition(s) and unique constitution. For this reason, an herbal formula that works for one person may not have the same benefit for another. It is important that you are being prescribed your herbs from a trained and licensed practitioner. Your Chinese Medicine Doctor has extensive herbal training and holds deep reverence for the healing power of nature that is found in these herbs. Rest assured that any herbal formula prescribed to you will be safe and effective. Herbal medicine is used to elongate and build on the effects of your acupuncture treatment. In this way, acupuncture and herbal medicine work synergistically to treat many conditions and help you reach your highest potential.
Dosage
Depending on your symptoms and health goals, a course of herbal medicine can range from 1 week to a few months.
Typically, herbs are taken 3 times per day throughout the whole course of treatment.
It is important to follow the dosage guidelines provided to you by your practitioner. At Medicine of the Peace, we want to make your herbal formula an easy addition to your daily routine. Always talk to your practitioner before changing or discontinuing your course of treatment. All acupuncture treatments include herbal consultation, with herbs sold separately.
